WEDNESDAY 7th AUGUST

Long Bennington 6 miles

This route included riverside walking, the villages of Westborough and Dry Doddington (notable for its church with a tower that leans at a greater angle than the Leaning Tower of Pisa), plus a section of the Viking Way. Maggie suggested that a special mention should go to the man from the Highways Agency who was doing a brilliant job of clearing one of the paths where they were walking and also went beyond the call of duty to retrieve and return the walking pole that one of our group had dropped. A warm welcome to Ray whose first walk with the Newark Ramblers this was.

Redmile, Plungar and Barkestone Le Vale 7 miles

Bob M. led the walk and makes this report:

17 walkers set off from Redmile in pleasant walking conditions and followed the Grantham Canal, passing a memorial for 6 crew members whose Lancaster bomber crashed in March 1943 whilst attempting a crash landing. Lunch was taken in the village of Plungar, before returning via Barkestone over the overgrown fields and barley crops. Along the way Belvoir Castle came into view, and there were many interesting and colourful sightings of butterflies & moths pointed out by Andrea and Judy. 6 walkers called for light refreshments in the Windmill.
