SUNDAY 14th January
Silverhill 8.2 miles
Caroline led the group from the Silverhill Country Park (the site of the old slag heap). They ascended to the highest point in Nottinghamshire, (204.3 metres which gave a wonderful panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. Here they found the huge bronze statue in memory of countless miners who worked the local pits. The circular route then followed the old railway lines which before closure linked the mines at Silverhill, Tibshelf and Pleasley. A nice change to have a mud free walk!
The bronze statue of a kneeling coal miner with a Davy lamp is located on a rock plinth in the centre of the viewpoint. The sculpture, called Testing for Gas, was created by artist Antony Dufort as "A tribute to the Miners of the Nottinghamshire coalfields", commemorating coal mining at the 85 Nottinghamshire collieries.

WEDNESDAY 17th January
Croxton Kerrial and Branston 6.4 miles
Tony led this walk and reported:
Today our walk took us through the rolling hills around Croxton Kerrial and Branston. The ground was very firm today -- air temperature ranging from 0 degrees to plus 1. Two special treats today -----saw at least 1 red kite and 1 buzzard. It's a great area to walk, with ever changing views.

Stapleford and Brough 7.5 miles
Izzie lead 28 of us on a walk from Stapleford woods to the countryside around Brough. A beautiful but a very cold day with far reaching views across the Lincolnshire countryside. As usual a great walk in lovely company.
