SUNDAY 21st January

Bradgate Park and Beacon Hill 8.2 miles

An interesting new walk for Newark ramblers around the Bradgate Park area led by John. They started from Swithland wood south car park and headed to Windmill Hill where there were stunning country views, and a welcome coffee stop. They continued up to Beacon Hill trig point which is at 248 metres which gave views over Leicestershire and beyond, with the added benefit of picnic tables for lunch. The route then went back down to Old John Tower, past the remains of Bradgate House to the start point.  Most of the walk was on hard standing ground.

Jacqui commented: It was a lovely walk despite the wind.

WEDNESDAY 24th January

East Stoke Thorpe Elston 5.5 miles

Due to road repairs the start point had to be moved to East Stoke Village. There was an interesting stop at the old chapel in Elston. It is a redundant Anglican church to the north-east of the village. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust.

There were 22 of us and the weather was really good after so much rain and wind recently.

Caunton Norwell 7.1 miles

An interesting and enjoyable walk with Tony as always. Always some mud and complicated stiles. At one point we had to crawl under an overhanging tree on a very narrow pathway.

Tony Reported:

Today's walk was from Caunton to Norwell and back.  Tracks, cross fields and some road walking   23 members started the walk with 2 more joining us at Norwell. Coffee and lunch stops were taken in Norwell.

The weather was good.  There was one or two soggy ground patches along our route. Towards the end we had to overcome a fairly large tree which had come down during resent gale.
